Hourly rate, parts margin, packages: the sums behind a profitable workshop.
Add up the workshop's annual overheads (loaded mechanics' wages, rent, tooling and diagnostic scanners, insurance, energy) then divide by the hours actually billed — often 70 to 80% of the hours on site. Example: 130 000 € of overheads ÷ 2 600 billed h = 50 €/h in cost, before margin. Bill below that and you're paying to work.
The multipliers used typically run from 1,3 to 2 on the purchase price excl. VAT, depending on the parts category and their value. The key is to think per repair: parts + labour together. Any discount given on parts has to be made up on the hourly rate, otherwise it's your profit that ends up as the adjustment variable.
Package price = parts at real purchase price × your multiplier + standard labour time × hourly rate + target margin. Example in the app: an oil-change + filter package costs 69,80 €; with a 40% margin, the recommended price is 117,26 € incl. VAT. The advertised package stays profitable even when the filter price moves.
Track two figures: the margin earned per repair (billed − parts − labour) and the monthly break-even, the point where the cumulative margin covers your fixed costs. The app shows the gauge continuously and projects the date the month moves into the black.
Scan the supplier invoice: the app reads the lines, updates the price of each part number and recalculates your packages. You catch the quiet rises — filters, pads, lubricants — before they nibble away a whole month's margin.
